TISA AVE

By:  Mary Jane Dow

Happy New Year to all those I haven’t greeted yet. Hope 2011 will be a great one for everyone.

Tisa emptied out over the holidays but is filling up again. The Dows and the Beal’s  headed north for the holidays but have returned. Bonnie Beal’s mother, Bonnie, flew back to Florida with Bonnie and Bill for a 10 day visit. Too bad the weather hasn’t been nicer for her – but at least there is no snow.

Howie Ryan drove himself down from Canada and is already back involved in so many Village activities.

Mickey and Tony Quattrone are here from New York. Sue and Jerry Klepfer were here in December to get their home ready for their renter who has just arrived from New York. Haven’t had a chance to talk to him yet, but surely will before the next newsletter.

Betty Tario returned right after Christmas and is back to bingo and golf. She had a big birthday this summer and was honored at a great party by her daughter. The excitement was too much for Betty and she had an anxiety attack and ended up being transported to the hospital. Way to liven up a party Betty!

Pat Hinton has cut back her hours at the Elks. She and Chuck are just volunteering there occasionally. They had been working much too hard.

Sally Cox’s sister is visiting her and will accompany her on the Village cruise.

Also cruising to Aruba and Curacao are Claire and Al Andrade and Paul and Mary Jane Dow. Should have some good stories for next month’s newsletter unless I have to swear that “what happens on board stays on board”.

There will be a TISA AND CANDACE  BLOCK PARTY February 20th from 1to whenever at the corner of Tisa and Candace. Cost is $2 plus a side or dessert. Flyers with more information should have been delivered by the time this newsletter is published.

Saw on TV yesterday that Florida is the only state out of the 50 that does not have snow. We have so much to be grateful for! Stay warm!!

Varley Circle

By Ann Menna

All of the residences on Varley are now occupied.  This month I visited with three of the most recent arrivals.

Rao’s unit is rented to LINDA, JERRY AND son CAREY HAMILTON from Travers City, Michigan—the cherry capital of..(the world Linda said, but I am from the Niagara area...!!)          They have been in the village for 11 years, first owning but they like this arrangement better.  The Rao’s are from Rhode Island and have a home in Venice so this works out well for both families and Linda says they are great landlords.   Jerry had surgery in Michigan in August and has been getting medical care here and although they have friends and family here and in Venice, their activities have been limited this year.  Back home Jerry works on a golf course which he enjoys and he gets free golf too!

JACK SKOW and his dog and cat arrived December 12 from Pennsylvania and his friend Bess Kriner will join him at the end of the month.  We had a most interesting visit.  Jack was a supervisor of 10 plumbers in one of New York City’s school districts.  For the 32 years he was with New York’s Board of Education he commuted from Pennsylvania to New York every day—80 miles each way!  He also farmed 500 pigs with the help of five kids, and he taught night school in New York for 11 years!!  Two offspring still live in Pennsylvania, two in Alaska and one in Florida.  Unlike what we are hearing about much of the country his area is thriving; they are drilling gas wells, farmers have become millionaires and the motels and restaurants are full.

JOANNE AND JOHN REAGAN are sooo happy with the newest member of their family—a 9-month old rescue puppy named Amber they found on the internet.  Joanne had specific criteria and searched until she found the one her son-in-law says was “heaven-sent”.   They had Amber trained to be a “therapy dog” and up home Joanne takes her to rehab centers and to schools where Amber puts her head in the children’s laps and they learn by reading to her.

At home John teaches at the Academy for Life and Learning—for adults 55plus; being a history buff he recently taught about The Treaty of Versailles and how it changed the world.  In Englewood John moderates the Great Decisions group at the Tringali Centre and also a Philo Cafe discussion group where they choose a subject at one meeting i.e.  When is it okay to lie?”  Mull it over and then discuss it at their next meeting.  Sounds neat!

Well it seems we just celebrated Christmas and already we need to take out our red shirts once again to celebrate Valentine’s Day.  I don’t know about you, for me it is so exciting to be part of VHL we are always reminded of how interesting life can be.  My husband and I decided to buy tickets to a Square Dance evening at the hall, well…We had so much fun I can’t recall the last time we laughed so hard.  Thank you to Ray & Ginny Watkins for hosting the event.

Sarah Ollila is doing great and wishes to thank everyone for their concerns and good wishes.  We are so glad to see Sarah doing very well and soon we look forward to see her basking in the sunshine.

Bob & Marge Mitchell get the quarter of a century award this month for being residents of Widness Lane for 25 years.  Congratulations!

Betty & Jerry Olson went back home to be with their family hopefully we will see them back very soon.

Liz & Jack Barrett are back to the Village, Jack is recuping and doing  much better with Liz as is official nurse.

Viola Palmicci from Yarmouth, ME will be 89 years young on February 22nd.  Congratulations Viola we are happy to see you come back to Widness Lane for the third season to enjoy the Florida winter.

Sandra Curanzy had an unexpected visit from her great-grand-daughter Aliegha.  At the end of January her son Ray, his wife Maryann and his mother-in-law Maryann Mclister had a wonderful visit with the family.

As we continue on our life’s journey let us keep a smile and never forget a helping hand becomes a ray of sunshine for someone in need.
